Join us for a look at the art, design and thinking behind the creation of an animated feature film from the perspective of these three veteran artists from Blue Sky Studios. They will share information about their industry experience and careers in this ever changing and competitive field.
Sang Jun Lee received his BFA in Illustration at the Academy of Art University in California. After graduating, he continued to explore his imagination by specializing in character, costume, and creature design for live action film, feature Animation, commercial and game studios. Such clients include Industrial Light & Magic, Lucas Film, Blue Sky Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment, and Electronic Arts. His film credits include Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars Episode III, Men in Black II, Hulk, War of the Worlds, Horton Hears a Who, Rio and Blue Sky’s 2013 release, Leafmen.
Greg Couch was born in Bettendorf, Iowa, and spent the first eighteen years of his life there. This explains many things about him (if you’ve met Greg, you know what I’m talking about). He began his illustration career in 1983. Since that time he has worked on fifteen Children’s books including I Know the Moon and Halloween – both of which received Society of Illustrators Silver Medal Awards. He received an NAACP Image Award his recent picture book, Nothin’ But Trouble. Greg has also worked on six feature films for Blue Sky Studios, including Ice Age, Robots, Horton Hears a Who and Rio. He acted as Production Designer for the upcoming Leafmen and is currently helping to develop future films for them. He is still living, but now he does it in Nyack, New York.
Thomas Cardone was born in Bayside, New York, in 1964. He received a BFA in Design from NYIT and started his animation career at CGL Inc, a computer graphics research laboratory on campus. He was recruited by Walt Disney Feature Animation in Burbank, California in 1990. There he trained as a Background Artist and contributed to such films as The Rescuers Down Under, The Prince and the Pauper, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Chicken Little. He became Head of the Background Painting Department on Hercules, and Co-Art Director on Emperors New Groove.
He returned to New York in 2002 to join Blue Sky Studios on Robots. His Art Direction at Blue Sky can be seen in Ice Age: The Meltdown, Horton Hears a Who and Rio. He is currently in Development on upcoming films for Blue Sky Studios and lives in Roslyn, NY.
